A Vision of Open Beaches
On Monday, September 30th, the Haifa District Planning and Building Committee ruled against a plan to expand the Carmel Beach Towers. The plan required reclaiming land from the sea in order to uphold the Coastal Law, which SPNI successfully lobbied for in 2004, that requires new construction to allow for public access to the beach and waterfront. The Carmel Beach Towers received criticism when they were completed for disturbing the environment and surrounding areas.
SPNI praised the committee's decision, the beaches are a national asset which should be available to the entire public for the benefit of society as a whole.
