Seeking: Golden Squirrels
Shmulik Yidov, head of SPNI's Mammal Department, joined a team of researchers in search of the Golden Squirrel. Golden Squirrel is a literal translation of the Hebrew, סנאי זהוב (sna'ie zahov). The Sciurus anomalus is commonly known in English as the Caucasian squirrel or the Persian squirrel.Once common in northern Israel, climate change has pushed the small creature to find cooler habitats farther north. Today, the population remains abundant in Turkey, but has declined sharply in Israel, as well as neighboring countries, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.
