In the past eight years, Israel has suffered two massive oil spills, one of which may have been the worst environmental disaster in Israeli history.
Now, the Europe-Asia Pipeline Company has an agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to greatly increase the volume of oil that would be exported to Europe. This immense quantity of oil will be transported via an aging pipeline from the port of Eilat to Ashkelon on the Mediterranean.
There are huge risks of an oil leak that could irreversibly damage our land, wildlife, and an invaluable coral reef.
If you want to help protect the sacred land of Israel, please show your support and sign this petition.
The Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection fought hard against the agreement and essentially froze it when the Prime Ministers’ Office agreed with the Environment Ministry’s rule of zero additional risk for the Gulf of Eilat.
In a December 2021 Supreme Court case brought by the EAPC, the State and the Court agreed with the Environment Ministry’s position of zero added risk. This was a huge success in our battle against the pipeline – but the struggle continues.
In February 2022, in the Jerusalem District Court, the EAPC brought suit against the Environment Ministry’s policy for the Gulf of Eilat. In March, we, together with the Israeli Union for Environmental Defense and Tzalul — petitioned the court to act as respondents to the suit.
Our best hope for protecting the environment is to declare the Red Sea (and Gulf of Eilat) an international coral sanctuary, free from development.
We met with several senior officials at the U.S. Embassy in Israel to advance a regional cooperation agreement. Our goal is to get a session addressing this issue during the COP 27 talks scheduled for November 2022 at Sharm El Shaich in Israel. The aim is to declare the Red Sea an international coral sanctuary, that is free from development.
