We fear that as a whole, the judicial reforms would eliminate or severely curtail nearly all the effective tools that SPNI and other civil society organizations have to protect nature and insure that Israel meets its carbon emission reduction goals. Among other things, they would deprive the Israeli public of its right to raise claims and objections against governmental actions, these reforms would severely limit the ability of civil society organizations to seek effective remedies to correct environmental injustices.
The changes being proposed to the judicial system alone would cause untold damage to Israel’s nature, the environment, and public health. Together with other proposed laws, such as overrides of environmental impact assessment in planning infrastructure projects, Israel would very quickly face real ecological disaster.
We call on the government of Israel to act judiciously and avoid promoting such drastic legislative changes without in-depth dialogue. The enactment of such legislation will harm, irrevocably, a range of significant environmental issue of concern to the Israeli public.
SPNI is Israel’s largest and most impactful environmental organization. Since 1953, SPNI has been protecting Israel’s nature and environment through policy change, science, education, and activism.
Nature Israel, the nonprofit arm of SPNI in the U.S. since 1986, has worked to support SPNI’s efforts, to raise awareness and advance the cause, and to connect those in the U.S. with how their donations are making a material difference.
