In 2008, thousands of Israelis participated in the hotly-contested, entertaining, and highly educational election which featured some serious contenders:  the red falcon, the biblical vulture, the white-chested kingfisher, the white barn owl, and the hoopoe among others; after months of voting, President Shimon Peres announced the winner!
