SPNI and Mekorot Reduce Light Pollution

Dark Skies reveal the beautiful milky way galaxy

A joint project between SPNI and Mekorot, Israel’s National Water Company, is reducing light pollution across Israel.

Our experts worked with Mekorot's operations team to identify ways to reduce light pollution without interfering with their business operations. For example, which lights could be turned off completely or dimmed. In other places lampposts were replaced with shorter models which focus light downwards.

This program is estimated to save Mekorot over $150,000 a year and reduce their carbon emissions. All thanks to you.

Light pollution can be very harmful to nature. It interferes with natural cycles and processes. For example light pollution can block starlight which birds use to migrate. It can also confuse turtle hatchlings who try to make their way to the sea.
